Chocolate French Toast

  • Makes: 6 to 8 servings  
  • Preparation Time: 15 minutes 
  • Cooking Time: 45 minutes 

Ingredients

12 slices egg or white bread, crusts removed

6 oz175 g chopped semisweet chocolate

5 eggs

1/2 cup125 mL orange juice

1/4 cup50 mL melted butter

1/3 cup75 mL granulated sugar

1 1/2 cups375 mL Carnation® Regular, 2% or Fat Free Evaporated Milk

1 tsp5 mL vanilla extract

Confectioner’s (icing) sugar

orange sections (optional)

Directions

  1 In a well greased 13- by 9-inch (3 L) baking dish, arrange 6 bread slices. Sprinkle over chopped chocolate. Top with remaining slices.

  2 In a large bowl, beat eggs lightly. Whisk in orange juice, butter, sugar, evaporated milk and vanilla. Pour over bread. Let stand 30 minutes.

  3 Bake in a preheated 350ºF (180ºC) oven for 45 minutes, or until puffed and lightly browned. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar. Serve with orange sections

Tip(s)

Assemble, cover and refrigerate overnight (butter will harden, but will melt during cooking). Let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking.
