Simple White Sauce
Description: Great meals start with our Simple White Sauce. You can whip up this wonderfully creamy sauce in just 10 minutes by combining butter, all purpose flour, Carnation Regular, 2% or Fat Free Evaporated Milk and a pinch of salt.



Prep Time:10 minutes
Freezing:not recommended

Ingredients Preparation
1½ tbsp[22 mL]butter
1½ tbsp[22 mL]Robin Hood® All Purpose Flour
1 can[370 mL]Carnation® Regular, 2% or Fat Free Evaporated Milk
1 tsp[5 mL]salt
Melt butter in medium saucepan, add flour and cook over low heat stirring for 1 minute.

Whisk in milk and salt. Bring to a boil, lower heat and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until sauce has thickened.

TIPS:
• The sauce should lightly coat the back of a spoon.


Makes 1 ½ cups (375 mL)

The microwave method is excellent and quick. Whisk the butter and flour together and cook on hi for about 15 seconds. Whisk in milk and then cook on hi at 1 -2 minute intervals - whisking each time - until thickened. Way easier and faster than stove top!

I wonder what the nutritional value is using the Fat Free Evap milk vs. the regular?

This is for Sandi, who had a message in 2011. If you look for "Simple White Sauce" in the Carnation search menu, you will find 88 recipes. I have not looked at all of them, yet!

This is not gluten free if it has flour

I've heard of this basic white sauce but what can it be used for? Can you add garlic and cheese to it to make a nice pasta sauce?

This was the first sauce I learned how to cook as a young child. It is really easy and always turns out the right consistency.
